Oscar-winning documentary “Inocente” at the Fougro Gardens in Nafplio,on August 1&2 at 8:30pm
INOCENTE by Sean Fine and Andrea Nix (40′) 2012
Exile Room inaugurates a new collaboration with multi-space Fougaro, located in the outskirts of Nafplio, with two open-air screenings of Oscar-winning documentary “Inocente” at the Fougaro Gardens. The screening is part of Exile Room’s 8-month long tour “Docs on Wheels” with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Athens, aiming to bring unexpected films to unexpected locations.
After making doc-tastic stops at Karditsa, Thebes, Sparta, Corfu, Leros and the Renti and Nikea neighborhoods in Athens, “Docs on Wheels” is coming to a close with “Inocente”, which won the Academy Award for Best Short Documentary in 2013. The two screenings will take place shortly before the end of Mark Hadjipatera’s solo show, taking place at the Fougaro Gallery next door, bidding adieu to his colorful creations with the colorful paint-splattered dreams of a very different emerging artist: Inocente Izucar!
FRIDAY + SATURDAY, AUGUST 1+2 @ FOUGARO at 8.30pm
15-year-old Inocente wants to run away and join the circus. Every morning when she wakes up, she paints colorful designs on her face and prays that her schoolmates don’t realize that she’s homeless. The only thing that surpasses her imaginative makeup are the huge canvases where she’s been documenting her dreams since she was 12 years old. ARTS: A Reason to Survive, a nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic arts programming to children and young adults dealing with homelessness, selected her for the program’s annual art show and gave her three months to produce 30 pieces, opening the door to a brighter future. Growing up on the streets of San Diego, Inocente and her family never spent more than three months in one place. Her father was deported and her mother tried to take her own life, but Inocente never let darkness into her heart. Instead, bright colors became her personal revolution and painting became the passport to a paint-splattered future, even if she still has no idea who Picasso and Dali are!
